Febrile seizures are convulsions triggered by fever in infants and young children. These seizures usually occur between six months to five years and are linked to rapid temperature spikes rather than the severity of the fever. Though alarming, most febrile seizures do not cause long-term health issues.
Febrile seizures are classified into two types:
A simple febrile seizure is the most common type, lasting less than 15 minutes and affecting the entire body. These seizures do not recur within 24 hours and typically resolve without medical complications.
A complex febrile seizure lasts more than 15 minutes, affects only one part of the body, or occurs multiple times within 24 hours. Children who experience complex febrile seizures may require further medical evaluation to rule out underlying neurological conditions.
A pediatrician will assess febrile seizures through physical examination, medical history, and sometimes EEG or MRI to exclude serious neurological disorders. In most cases, no further testing is required for simple febrile seizures.
Seek medical attention if the febrile seizure lasts more than five minutes, if the child experiences difficulty breathing, or if they have multiple seizures within a short period.
