Infertility happens when the male or female reproductive system fails to achieve a pregnancy after a year or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. In fact, infertility affects millions of people worldwide, an estimate suggests that between 50 million couples and 190 million individuals live with infertility globally.
However, other than not getting pregnant, most of the couples may not have any other symptoms.
Pelvic exam: At shouryas hospital, our expert doctors will perform a pelvic exam, including a Pap smear to check for signs of disease or structural problems.
Blood test: A blood test can check hormone levels, including thyroid hormones of women.
Transvaginal ultrasound: When necessary, we suggest an ultrasound to check for problems with the women’s reproductive system.
Hysteroscopy: Our experienced expert at shouryas hospital inserts a thin, lighted tube – hysteroscope into the uterus to examine the health status of the uterus.
Laparoscopy: A laparoscope will be inserted through a small abdominal incision. Laparoscopy helps identify problems like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and scar tissue.
Saline sonohysterogram (SIS): We fill the uterus with saline and conduct a transvaginal ultrasound. A fluid filled uterus makes it easy to check inside the uterus.
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): An x-ray that checks for blockages in the fallopian tubes.
Semen analysis: This test checks for sperm problems, such as poor mobility and low sperm count. This is the only test that will be needed in the workup of infertility for men.
Scrotal ultrasound: An ultrasound of the scrotum recognizes varicoceles or other testicular problems.
Blood test: This test can help to check testosterone, thyroid and other hormone levels.
Infertility in men and women can also be treated with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).
There are several types of ART:IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): Sperm will be placed directly inside the women’s uterus while they are ovulating.
IVF (in vitro fertilization): The sperm and egg will be allowed to fertilize in the lab. The fertilized egg grows for 3-5 days. Then the embryo will be placed in the woman’s uterus.
GIFT (gamete intrafallopian transfer) and ZIFT (zygote intrafallopian transfer): The egg and sperm will be gathered and quickly placed in a fallopian tube.
With GIFT, both the sperm and eggs will be placed into the fallopian tube. With ZIFT, the sperm and eggs will be brought together in a lab and then a fertilized egg is placed into the tube for 1 day i.e., 24 hours.
